# What You Need:

→ Cake

01 - 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
02 - 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
03 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
04 - 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
05 - 2 cups granulated sugar
06 - 4 large eggs
07 - 1 cup whole milk
08 - 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

→ Buttercream Frosting

09 - 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
10 - 4 cups powdered sugar
11 - 2 to 3 tablespoons milk
12 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
13 - Pinch of salt

→ Decoration

14 - 2 pounds white fondant
15 - Food coloring gel (blue, red, green, or team colors of choice)
16 - Edible black food marker or black fondant
17 - Cornstarch for rolling fondant

# How To Make:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line a 9x13-inch cake pan with parchment paper.
02 - Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl.
03 - In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, blending thoroughly after each addition.
04 - Mix in vanilla extract. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk, starting and finishing with flour. Stir just until the batter is combined.
05 - Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center removes clean. Allow cake to cool completely in the pan.
06 - Beat butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and salt, beating until the mixture is fluffy and spreadable.
07 - Once cooled, remove cake from pan. Using a serrated knife, sculpt the cake into a jersey silhouette, carving curves at the shoulders and indentations at the sides for armholes.
08 - Spread a thin layer of buttercream over the entire cake to seal in crumbs. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set.
09 - Tint fondant with food coloring gel to match preferred team colors. Roll fondant on a cornstarch-dusted surface to 1/8-inch thickness.
10 - Drape the rolled fondant over the cooled cake, smoothing the surface and trimming any excess.
11 - Use additional colored fondant or food markers to decorate with jersey accents such as collar, numbers, name, stripes, and graduation year.
12 - Transfer decorated cake to a serving board and display.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • You get to personalize every inch with team colors, numbers, and a special name—like sneaking in a heartfelt message they won't expect.
  • It became the centerpiece of our graduation table, and everyone snapped photos before eating.
02 -
  • If you try to cut the cake before it's completely cooled, it will crumble and ruin your jersey shape.
  • Chilling the crumb coat makes the fondant drape perfectly smooth instead of wrinkling at the corners.
03 -
  • Start with chilled cake for easier carving—warm cake falls apart.
  • Use an offset spatula for getting the crumb coat extra smooth before fondant.
